Don’t.
Trust.
Have Faith.
You are alone,
dark to the sound
Make me say how I feel about you,
that this is how my heart should be.
Tell me to be happy now.
that I'm not the only one.
I’m not your victim, no not at all.
When did you teach me to hurt?
I was born to let you down
I was born to leave you late
A black kiss
And a red fist
defeated
I look myself in the mirror
Someone else lives up to your name
I sat alone (2x)
Slowed Over
Broken in pieces.
To believe in love, of love.
When you're so tired,
so sad,
so sad.
No.
Don't give up.
It's the strength to let go,
without fear.
And to open up,
to let all be beautiful.
our voice is
not our own.
nothing is.
and nothing is.
and when you feel it all
pulled apart
be reminded
its the pieces i love.
about
Heartless Fools by Indianapolis, IN based Jordan Munson is the first release on Church of Noise Records. Recorded at Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavík, Iceland (Bjork, Brian Eno, Sigur Ros, Oneotrix Point Never, etc, etc, etc) "Heartless Fools" showcases Munson's ambidextrous skills of weaving knotty and complex avant-pop around soaring neo-classical compositions. The album features contributions by experimental pop trio Square Peg Round Hole, vocalists Isaiah Robinson and Hanna Benn, and Icelandic cellist Þórdís Gerður Jónsdóttir and reaches deep into the worlds of jazz, classical music and pop song structures to create a record in deep conversations with all of these traditions.
Heartless Fools is a collection of works exploring multiplicity and often contradictory ideas. Supported by a Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, many of the works were realized and recorded in January 2018 at Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavík, Iceland. Since these initial recordings, the music has grown through far-reaching collaborations with musicians in the worlds of jazz, classical, and pop. Album credits include experimental pop trio Square Peg Round Hole, vocalists Isaiah Robinson and Hanna Benn, and Icelandic cellist Þórdís Gerður Jónsdóttir.
While the music itself is not intended to be political, the title Heartless Fools refers to the response of two characters to the current political landscape. The first is working through shock and grief as they awake to the realities of this world, and is trying to make sense of it all. The other, fueled by an imagined loss of cultural identity, is full of a rage that causes them to do inhumane things. This shows up in the music as a struggle between order and chaos, contemplation and impatience. The works constantly push in pull, both internally and with one another.

During the pandemic, Joyful Noise Records staff and artists created the non-profit initiative The Church of Noise. Church of Noise's purpose was to fund adventurous music during a time when musician's main mode of sustaining themselves (touring) was not available. Continuing through and into post-pandemic times, Church of Noise has funded artists through no-strings attached grants on a quarterly basis. The "Church" is a registered non-profit with a board of "Church Elders" comprised of Joyful Noise Records artists and former Church of Noise recipients. The current board includes: CJ Boyd, Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Yoni Wolf (Why?), Karl Hoffstetter (Joyful Noise), k hover (Sound of Ceres), Karima Walker, Jess Joy, Hanna Benn, Enrique Tena, Hanna Benn and Marina Tadic. Recipients include artists like Ben Sloan, My Tree, Two Lips, Tashi Dorji and more.
As a not-for-profit record label Church of Noise Records brings that same spirit into the physical realm during a time when deep and compelling music faces a similar level of precarity. For more info see Church of Noise website and Instagram.
